ENERGIZE!

Want to feel more energized and less stressed? Perhaps you spend a lot of time in front of the computer screen, the TV or some other screen. Here are a few ways to feel energized.

The most obvious is to stop spending so much time in front of a screen. OK, not always practical, but worth a try every now and then.

So get up during commercials or every half hour and stretch.  It’s the least you can do, and it will make your screen time more enjoyable, as well.

In fact, get up and do some aerobic exercise, even just for 30 seconds. Jumping jacks. Dance. Fast-paced push-ups. Skip rope. Run up and down the stairs, as I often do. Anything.

Every few minutes move your eyes away from the screen. Roll your eyes up, to the left, to the right, but most importantly, focus them on something closer and also on something farther than the screen.  In fact, roll your head, as well.  Give your eyes a break and your neck a stretch.

Force a yawn. Stretching your face will boost that energy and reduce that stress.  Stretch it wide and – oops – it’s hard to fake a yawn without a real one coming on.

Energize!

  1. I think these tips are great, and the junping jacks I like most, cause it keeps me awake, cause I spend a lot of time at the computer, thanks again.

  2. Very good tips. I tend to forget to move my eyes away from the computer screen. Thank you for reminding me how important it is to do my eyes exercises. I use a software called “Vision Defense.” When it beeps I know that it is time to move my eyes away from the screen for a few seconds.

  4. I completely agree that our bodies need to exercise. I felt the changes myself, after I started working out regularly, three times a week. I woke up easier in the morning, slept better, felt more happy and alive, and of course thinner, which is always a plus. 🙂 But I still have to spend at least 6 hours per day in front of the computer, as this is what I do for a living. But if I keep doing some exercising, I think I’ll be fine.

  5. Thank you for tips! I use kettlebells for destress. After an hour of work I just step out and do ten/fifteen minutes of swings or snatches. If the weather is trushy I open the window and do just right there – those don’t take up much room.

  6. Great advice. I take a mid-afternoon nap every day just to get the blood pumping and get some fresh air. Its an easy plan to stick with.

  7. This is so very true- our modern way of life is out of snyc with our actual needs. Our bodies are simply not meant to sit there most of the day as we pile processed foods and sugars into it! The good news is that exercise gives you more energy and you feel elated and more able to exercise!

I’d advise anyone who’s really unfit to start with walking, then fast walking and find a group activity which is physically demanding but fun.

  8. Our instinct has basically not changed any during the 10,000 years becuase we did not meet the drastic conditions required for mutation.

  9. Thanks. That really helped. Though the thought of doing jumping jacks in my office makes me smile, which relieves more stress than anything else.

  10. Taking a walk during the day really makes a difference too, and taking the time to notice all the beauty around us- no matter where we are. A beautiful flower, the clouds in the sky, a smiling face! There is beauty all around us, we just need to look!

I get a lot of my exercise done when I’m watching TV too- I do my sit-ups and lunges during the commercials, or even during the show! Only problem is my puppy thinks it’s play time when I do this- but that makes me smile too:)

  11. Well, it seems people are more to computers these days. Gazing at the screen most of the time because you can’t get up. It is as if you are glued to the screen. Very hard to avoid it.

But I find a very good way like keep looking at things outside the screen every minute or around 15 to 20 seconds. And that will allow the eyelids to blink preventing it from drying out. Or use a self lubricating drops.

  12. These are great tips, though not always easy to follow on a long work day at the computer. I find that outside factors like a healthy diet, good sleep habits, and an exercise regimen have the greatest effect for me. Thanks for posting!
